They perform miracles week in, week out for their clubs, winning trophies on a regular basis. But put them in England shirts and they look as though they’ve never been introduced to each other. On paper, England’s squad are as good as any other team in the world… but football’s played on grass, not paper. Until FIFA change the rules so that England could field 16 players in every game there’s always going to be trouble. If only we had San Marino, Andorra, Lichtenstein and Malta in the group we’d be fine.
